: General Festival Information :

Calling all Festivarians and Dead Heads!  The MAY DAZE Pre-Summer Jam & Pig Roast is almost totally planned!  Changes, clarifications and updates will be continually posted to the website, so check back frequently to stay informed of what’s going on and when.

Jammin' around the campfire!  We are planning on having 2-3 large fire pits on the grounds.  We suggest that everyone brings firewood to contribute since it's going to be a long weekend, and the fires will no doubt burn all night.

We ask that you read every word on every link provided on this website. A tremendous amount of time, effort and planning is required not just to do this, but to do it right. It’s a labor of love to be sure; however, the cooperation and responsibility we need to pull it off properly has to be assumed and respected by everyone attending. The venue and location of any festival is one of the keys to its success; we all hope that this is the first of many and a great kickoff to the summer.

It’s all happening at Matt & Maria Jacobsen’s 30+ acre spread in Strasburg, Colorado – only 30 miles east of Denver, just minutes off I-70. It’s an easy drive from the metro area and a quick ride home after a long weekend. Here’s where we are:

  • Everyone’s welcome to attend; however, there will only be a strictly limited number of tickets available in order to avoid the requirement for a special use permit from the county. TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW through Quixote’s online: http://cervantes.baselineticketing.com and our ticket link will take you right there. Due to the growing momentum of this event, all we can suggest is that you act fast so you’re not left out. Once the tickets are gone, they’re gone…and nothin’s gonna bring ‘em back! Special thanks to Buddy Cage for the free national publicity plugs on Sirius 17, the Jam On channel!

  • Tickets will be a great value and will include three full days of music (that will start early every day), as well as camping. If your schedule allows, we suggest you arrive Thursday to get your camp set up where you want it. The festival will begin by noon on Friday, although there will also be extended sound checks Thursday afternoon and evening, which will get things started nice and early. Bring your own food, favorite beverages, coolers, ice and grill. Make sure you review the What To Bring section so you don't overlook items you'll want to have with you.

  • The music lineup is almost complete and includes many of your local favorites as well as several very special out-of-town guests that are sure to play some tunes you won’t believe you’re hearing live.

  • The location is just exactly right, offering more than 22 acres to set up your camp as elaborately as you like. There’s going to be a cash prize awarded for the best campsite still standing after all three (F/S/S) nights, so bring your shovel, poles, rope, stakes, tarps, bungee cords and don’t forget the duct tape - and make sure to register your entry on Friday!

  • We'll be roasting three 120-140 lb. pigs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well as vending BBQ pork sandwiches, chicken, burgers, brats, baked beans, green chili and a complete vegetarian lineup!

  • Vendors are welcome and encouraged for only the price of three day admission... discretion in vending strongly advised!

  • Kids and dogs are welcome provided you are responsible parents and dog owners – please do not defer this responsibility to others!

  • Musicians - Bring your instruments and jam around the campfire!

  • Everyone entering the festival grounds will have the opportunity to donate canned food to the county food bank in exchange for discounted parking. We are requesting two cans of food per person in every vehicle entering the grounds. This may be as simple as two cans of soup that might cost as little as $1.00 - or something heartier for just a little bit more. This food goes directly to people that cannot afford to feed themselves or their children. BUY SOME EXTRA FOR DONATIONS!

  • Spend the weekend! Bring your tent, camper, RV or bus – we won’t run out of room!

  • The EMS services in this area are on a volunteer basis and always short of funding. We will be recycling everything we possibly can and donating the proceeds accordingly. It will be helpful to us if you bring your beverages in cans as opposed to bottles, and also make a conscious effort to dispose of everything properly to simplify the process of separating these items appropriately. BRING YOUR BEVERAGES IN CANS!

  • We want and need vendors to enhance the festival experience. The price to vend is only the cost of a three day pass for admission plus parking. All we ask is that you be responsible with your merchandise, and not sell anything illegal. Please mailto: vending@maydaze.net in advance if you intend to come to May Daze as a vendor. Don’t miss the opportunity to make and sell your own shirts using the festival logos! You can contact http://www.splaquetdesigns.com for information about obtaining the files and links you need.

: Children & Pets :

Children and pets are being permitted at May Daze provided the parents and owners act responsibly and do not expect others to assume their roles.

The borders of the property are also borders of neighbors that have a variety of animals, including sheep. Any dog that makes it through the fence onto a farmer or rancher’s property, or continually harasses livestock runs the risk of being shot by landowners protecting their investment. This is no joke and a very simple reality in the farming and ranching world. ALL DOGS MUST BE KEPT ON LEASHES AND CLEANED UP AFTER - PLEASE LEAVE ALL UNRULY PETS INCLUDING PIT BULLS AT HOME!

Bringing children and pets to festivals can be a great time for everyone, provided a basic level of consideration for others and common sense is exercised the entire time.

: Rules & Warnings :

Clearly we’re doing this event so everyone can have a great time and listen to some unforgettable music. Nevertheless, there are always a few rules to follow, and this event is no different. Please abide with the following and help make this event fun and safe:

ALCOHOL: May Daze is not providing alcohol for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is over indulgence, safety to you and others, and our liability. If you are under 21, there is no drinking on the way, during, or on the way home from the festival – NOBODY SHOULD BE DRINKING IN THE CAR WHILE DRIVING. Everyone leaving the festival will pass through security to evaluate your ability to drive. If it is determined that you are a risk to yourself or others, you will be requested to stay on the grounds until such time as you are not a risk. If you are considered a risk, and STILL insist on driving, we will notify the authorities of your vehicle in order to protect you and others, as well as ourselves. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!

NO ILLEGAL DRUGS OR THE SELLING OF ILLEGAL DRUGS: There will not be any searching of any kind; however, if you don’t think this is important, just refer to the consequences associated with the Rave Act.

NO NITROUS TANKS OR WEAPONS OF ANY KIND: Don’t be a dumb ass. You will be sent packing regardless of the time with no questions asked and no appeals - you will not pass go, and you certainly will not collect $200.

TAPING POLICY: We expect anyone bringing audio gear to respect each band's policy towards taping when it is announced.

STAY INSIDE THE PROPERTY BOUNDARIES: They will be well marked so there should be no question as to where you are allowed to be.

STAY INSIDE THE FESTIVAL AREA: This event is no different than any other with regard to back stage access, if you don’t have the appropriate pass for a particular area, don’t try to get in and please don’t put others in the position of having to keep you out.

STAY AWAY FROM THE HOUSE: This goes for everyone - the house is off limits - period.

CAMP FIRESWe have not determined the fire risk and cannot until we are much closer to the event. Nevertheless, at this time we are planning on having 2-3 large fire pits on the grounds. We suggest that everyone brings firewood to contribute since it's going to be a long weekend, and the fires will no doubt burn all night. For obvious reasons, fires will only be allowed in the designated areas, please don't take it upon yourself to decide where to make your own fire.

: What to Bring :

CHAIRS: This is a festival setting! There will be more than enough room to move around and get comfortable. Make sure to bring enough chairs for your campsite as well as for the enjoying the music.

PROPANE TENT HEATERS: Many stores selling camping supplies are also selling portable heaters that attach to small propane cylinders. If used properly, they provide a great source of heat on a cold night. Obviously, the dangers associated with these units include fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. If you intend to bring or purchase this type of heating unit, we ask that you thoroughly read and fully understand the directions and warnings so you DON'T BREATHE CARBON MONOXIDE FUMES OR SET YOUR TENT ON FIRE.

CLOTHING: Keep in mind that this is Colorado - anything can happen. You’re better off being prepared and not needing something, than not having something you need. As a general rule, this time of year should be beautiful and warm (often hot) during the day, and cool (often cold) at night. Layers of clothing are the best way to deal with the changing temperatures through the day. Rain gear, although we hope it’s not necessary, is always something to have with you regardless of where you’re headed. Footwear should include hiking boots, sneakers and sandals.

WATER: The most important thing to remember about the Colorado altitude is to begin drinking water while you’re on the plane if you fly, or along the way if you’re driving. There’s nothing that will ruin your time here faster than getting dehydrated. If you don’t stay ahead of it, you run the risk of fatigue, headaches and nausea that will last longer than the event. STAY SMART, HAVE FUN AND DRINK A LOT OF WATER BEFORE THE EVENT!

BLANKETS: The grounds are going to be improved for this festival as well as future events. In order to avoid the nightmare associated with the combination of water and dirt, we will be laying a considerable amount of asphalt. While this will be quite the lifesaver in the event of rain, it can also get very warm during the day. Accordingly, we are suggesting that everyone bring blankets to (a) secure your spot, and (b) provide you with a soft dance floor in lieu of a potentially hot surface.

SOLAR SHOWER: We will provide a water mister to cool you down and rinse you off; however, the water will be the outside temperature or colder in order to feel refreshing. One of the old camping staples you won't want to forget, or purchase if you haven't already, is a solar shower. These lightweight lifesavers can be filled with water from a hose and laid on your car's rooftop with the solar side facing up. After several hours in the sun, the water is actually hot, and adequately provides 4-5 quick rinses, 2-3 good showers or 1 long deluxe shower sure to bring you back to life!...We set ours up with three 8’ wooden 2 x 2 poles leaned in teepee style and wrapped together with a bungee cord so the hook can support the handle on the shower and you can stand under it.

SUNSCREEN: The altitude in Colorado can burn your skin considerably faster and more severely than at sea level. Given that this event is being held at the beginning of the summer, most of us will not have acquired an adequate tan base. Sunscreen is not just recommended; it’s critical and can ruin your weekend the first afternoon. DON’T FORGET THE SUNSCREEN!

FOOD & BEVERAGE: We will be vending a variety of BBQ and grilled foods, soups, chili’s and sandwiches for lunch and dinner, as well as having St. Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast. Beverages will include a wide range of soft drinks and bottled water and ice. We suggest that you plan to bring some food and drink of your own, and a grill or outdoor cooker if appropriate.

OUTDOOR GAMES: There’s plenty of room to spread out and play almost any game imaginable. So if you’re a volleyball, horseshoe, or badminton enthusiast, by all means bring it along and set it up. PLEASE LEAVE ANY SHARP POINTED LAWN DART GAMES AT HOME!

: Sponsors :

We currently have no sponsors for this year’s event. Clearly any sponsorship activity helps defray the up front costs that can only be recouped by ticket sales, while advertising the products and services of the sponsor. Any potential sponsors should contact sponsors@maydaze.net to discuss this further.

: The Benefit :

Any quality event is resourceful in giving back to the community it serves. May Daze is no different and we presently have three charitable donation projects in the works:

  • Everyone entering the festival grounds will have the opportunity to donate canned food to the county food bank in exchange for discounted parking. We are requesting two cans of food per person in every vehicle entering the grounds. This may be as simple as two cans of soup that might cost as little as $1.00 - or something heartier for just a little bit more. This food goes directly to people that cannot afford to feed themselves or their children. BUY SOME EXTRA FOR DONATIONS!

  • Presently there are plans to auction off a Les Paul guitar that will be signed by all of the musicians that have played May Daze. The details are being worked out, but the plan is to sell enough tickets to cover a reasonable amount and donate the proceeds. Check back to find our more about this at a later time.

: Vending :

Vendors are welcome and encouraged for only the price of three day admission... discretion in vending strongly advised! Everyone wanting to use the logos on the website for T-shirts is free to do so; currently nobody has planned to do this. What an opportunity! You’ll be missing out on some big sales if you don’t make some festival specific shirts with our logos. You can contact splaquetdesigns.com for information about obtaining the files and links you need. ALL VENDORS NEED TO CONTACT mike@maydaze.net PRIOR TO THE EVENT TO DISCUSS THEIR VENDING INTENTIONS.

: Roasting The Pig :
(Vegetarians may want to skip this section)

Yes folks, we are going to be roasting a whole pig. Three of them in fact, one on Friday (Arnold Ziffle), Saturday (Arnold Ziffle, Jr.), and Sunday (Arnold Ziffle III) for all you Green Acres fans out there.

There are a number of ways to roast a pig, and if done properly, they all turn out well and are a great menu item for those that eat pork – vegetarians beware!

One way to cook a whole pig is to do it in the ground. After a massive fire burns down in a large rock-lined fire pit, the pig’s cavity is seasoned and filled with fruit, the pig is then wrapped in water soaked burlap, placed in the pit and buried. After 24 hours it’s dug up, the burlap is removed, then cut up, and served.

The old fashioned and novice way, or last minute way is to prepare the pit in the same fashion described above and place the pig on some steel fencing material that’s tied to a dozen long pieces of rebar for the cooking surface. This is similar to cooking anything on the grill that’s extremely thick. It has to be slow cooked for a long time or the outside will be burned and the inside won’t be fit to eat. Charcoal comes in handy with this method, as the wood fire creates flames that will quickly burn the outside.

And then there’s our way - the way of modern convenience. We have a commercial Steal Your Face cooker with a variety of different attachments that can be added onto the base. The base surface is 2.5’ x 5’ and when used alone, it’s a propane powered gas grill on legs & wheels with cross bars for support to move it around. Used alone, it’s a massive grilling surface for bar-b-q’ing at large events. After adding the middle section and the roll top cover, it’s a motorized rotisserie capable of handling up to a 150 lb. hog.

So, at about 6 am, the ritual begins. The pig is laid out on a table and the cavity is salted and seasoned. The inside is lined with large chunks of fresh fruit (pineapples, apples & oranges), followed by 4-5 large roasting chickens. It’s then placed between two large clamps that are screwed together and tightened in order to close the cavity and prevent the chicken and fruit from falling out. Water soaked apple wood chunks are then placed on the lava rocks for smoking. It’s then hoisted into the roaster and begins rotating slowly at the easily controlled 225 degrees maintained constant by the propane fuel.

After the first hour or so, the fat below the skin begins to melt, so we'll be on guard to watch for grease fires. After that, it continues to spin for 8 hours. Then the skin is peeled off, and it continues to turn for another hour. Then it's coated with bbq sauce, continuing to turn for another 30-60 minutes. After that, it's ready to take out of the roaster, remove from the clamps, cut up, serve, and viola!

There’s nothing like roasting a pig at a music festival, it takes it to an entirely different level, and is some of the best bbq you’ll ever eat…and the chicken is the best ever!

We hope you enjoy it!
